This is the list of highest paid athletes over the past decade (last ten years)…
#1 Tiger Woods
10-year earnings: $845 million
Peak earnings: $115 million (2008)
Woods was the first athlete to accumulate more than $1 billion in career
earnings. Endorsements represent nearly 90% of his career income.
#2 Floyd Mayweather
10-year earnings: $660 million
Peak earnings: $300 million (2015)
Mayweather broke the bank with his record-setting bout with Manny Pacquiao in May. He earned nearly $250 million for the fight.
#3 Kobe Bryant
10-year earnings: $475 million
Peak earnings: $62 million (2013)
Bryant has cut back on his endorsement commitments, but his Lakers
paycheck has been the NBA’s top salary each of the past five seasons.
#4 LeBron James
10-year earnings: $472 million
Peak earnings: $72 million (2014)
James earns twice as much off the court as on it thanks to his hefty
Nike deal. That ratio changes in 2016 when he is due for a new playing
contract and the NBA’s new TV deal kicks in, which will significantly
boost the salary cap.
#5 Phil Mickelson
10-year earnings: $468 million
Peak earnings: $53 million (2014)
Mickelson out-earned Tiger Woods in the 12 months ending in June for the
first time since Woods turned pro in 1996. Mickelson’s longtime
partners include Barclays, KPMG, Callaway, Rolex and ExxonMobil.
#6 Roger Federer
10-year earnings: $455 million
Peak earnings: $71.5 million (2013)
Widely hailed as the greatest men’s tennis player of all-time, Federer
has cashed in off the court from his long-term partnerships with Nike,
Wilson, Credit Suisse, Rolex, Mercedes-Benz and more. His career prize
money is $95 million.
#7 David Beckham
10-year earnings: $441 million
Peak earnings: $75 million (2014)
Beckham retired in 2013 after a five-month stint with Paris
Saint-Germain (above). Last year was his biggest year ever off the pitch
as he signed a pair of deals with big upfront payments, including a
partnership with Diageo to launch a new Scotch whiskey and a joint
venture to develop Beckham-branded consumer products globally.
#8 Manny Pacquiao
10-year earnings: $432 million
Peak earnings: $160 million (2015)
Pacquiao is sidelined until 2016 after shoulder surgery following his
loss to Floyd Mayweather in May. Back-to-back defeats in 2012 sapped
Pacquiao’s marketing deals, but his sponsorship portfolio was revived
over the last 12 months with deals with Nike, Foot Locker, Wonderful
Pistachio and Nestle’s Butterfinger.
#9 Cristiano Ronaldo
10-year earnings: $407 million
Peak earnings: $80 million (2014-15)
The three-time FIFA Player of the Year is under contract with Real
Madrid through 2018. His 106 million Facebook followers is more than any
other celebrity in the world.
#10 Lionel Messi
10-year earnings: $350 million
Peak earnings: $73.8 million (2015)
Messi’s latest playing contract from Barcelona last year bumped his
annual salary $9 million. The four-time FIFA Player of the Year has
beefed up his endorsement portfolio in recent years.
